Frequently asked questions
How do I make colored text in Discord?
Discord colors text inside code blocks marked as ansi. Type your text here, select words, pick a color, then copy the result and paste it into Discord. The block keeps its colors after you send it.
Why don’t I see colors on my phone?
ANSI colors only render in the Discord desktop app and in the browser. The mobile apps show the same text without colors, so the message is still readable there.
Which colors are available?
Discord supports 8 text colors (gray, red, green, yellow, blue, pink, cyan and white) and 8 background colors, plus bold and underline. Other ANSI codes are ignored.
Why does the copied text look strange?
The color codes start with an invisible escape character. Always use the Copy button so the escape characters are included; typing the codes by hand will not work.
Can bots send colored text?
Yes. A bot can send the same ```ansi block in a message or an embed description. Paste the copied output into your bot’s message string.
Is there a length limit?
The whole message, including the color codes, must fit in Discord’s 2000 character limit (4000 with Nitro). The counter on this page includes the hidden codes.
